When looking for the best way to write an essay, many teachers and lecturers over the years will have laboured the point that it’s all about structure. Just windily writing can be a great way for you to get your points down but ultimately you are going to need to organise this into a coherent and logical structure. In the latest feature we take a look at how this swot analysis can transform your essay writing and because we like to be nice, we have even included our very own swot analysis template for you to use right away!

What is swot analysis?

As you may know already, SWOT stands for the following:

Addressing these topics allows you to effectively assess all aspects of your title and ensure they are comprehensively covered in your work.

How to construct a great SWOT analysis template

Putting together a great SWOT template is not rocket science, but it’s well worth getting it right as you could end up in trouble if not.

The typical template is a grid consisting of four boxes. You can then clearly add your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in each one before you get going with your piece of work.

The crucial thing here is to take your time and ensure each grid is filled in with care, as omitting things from this will have repercussions when it comes to finishing your essay. If you think of things late in the day, it may well prove difficult to shoehorn these into your document.

There are quite a few different grids you can use and which one you select will largely depend on the nature of your essay, as every topic is different. You may wish to add attack strategies, development strategies, things you wish to avoid and reinforcement ideas to get a bit more granular or a simple SWOT could be the best way to formulate your plan. This is down to your own intuition.

You can see a great selection of the very best SWOT templates here, so you can see which works best for your particular essay. Remember also, that SWOT can be used for a wide range of things, not just essays. You can use it for career planning and when you finish university, you may well discover that you can use the framework as part of your new career, the analysis is very versatile indeed.
