Getting Around

Madrid is conveniently connected with its speedy and modern Metro, operating 15 lines across the city with more than 300 stations. This is the way most people get around, but there is also a reliable bus service and a standard over-ground train that connects you to suburbs and other areas on the outskirts of the city centre. Student passes for public transport are available.

You can also use the city bicycle rental system and pay as you go, so you won’t need to own your own set of wheels. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even take the Cable Car from the city (Paseo del Pintor Rosales) over the River Manzanares and up to Casa de Campo, where you can enjoy a stunning view of Madrid.

Madrid is Spain’s fashion capital and has a wealth of shopping districts, whether you like designer labels, vintage wear or exclusive boutiques. The flourishing Salamanca neighbourhood has a host of expensive and high end fashion stores. Explore the quaint side streets for hidden gems, or stroll the avenue of Calle Serrano for popular and sought after brands. For couture and luxury designer clothing, head to Calle de Jose Ortega y Gasset, known as the Rodeo Drive of Madrid. Fans of classic and trendy vintage clothing will enjoy the area of El Rastro, while Chueca and Gran Vía districts have many casual and high street shops.

Madrid offers some of the hottest nightlife in the country. Start your evening with a bite to eat in one of the city’s buzzing tapas bars like Docamar or wine bars like García de la Navarra, then head to an iconic club or discoteca. Venues like the Teatro Kapital have a huge dancefloor and unique interiors, while Joy Eslava is a multipurpose space that offers live theatre and music, as well as a bar and dancefloor. Madrid is also home to a wide range of special and quirky bars, such as Tupperware. As a large capital city with so much choice, you can discover somewhere different every time you hit the town.

Restaurants and Eating Out

Tapas is one of Spain’s most iconic types of cuisine, and in Madrid you will find the freshest and tastiest tapas being served with a cold glass of San Miguel at many eateries. With lunch from 2pm, and dinner from 9pm, you can enjoy a relaxed and social dining experience every afternoon and evening. The cafes are steeped in Spanish tradition serving rich coffee, such as the Café Gijón established in 1888. You can even enjoy a glass of Cava with your lunch watching live music at Café Central.

In the evening, Madrid’s range of terrace bars and restaurants provide the perfect location for al-fresco dining. Overlook the city in the stunning El Cielo del Urban, or embrace the rooftop tranquillity as the sun sets over La Terraza de la Casa Encendida.

Take your pick of tranquil green spaces with Madrid’s many parks. Explore the royal Jardines de Sabatini, head to Real Jardín Botánico for pretty flowers and interesting plants, or visit El Capricho, which is more off the beaten track.  You can even play sports and enjoy the water fountains at Madrid Río.
